Les Fable de La Fontaine
 Dore's Illustrations for the Fables of La Fontaine by Gustave Dore, By the age of 16--and without ever having had an art lesson in his life--Gustave Dore had become the highest paid illustrator in France. Twenty years later, in 1868, when he was at the height of his powers, he produced these magnificent illustrations for La Fontaine's" Fables, enhancing poems and timeless stories with charming images of countryfolk, heroes from Greek mythology, and familiar beasts from the fables of Aesop. The present volume includes all 84 full-page plates plus a selection of 39 vignettes from a rare, early edition and depicts, among others, scenes from "The Wolf and the Lamb," "Tircis and Amarante," and "Ulysses" Companions."
